Enabling Closed Captions

How to Use Closed Captions on CG Cookie Videos

Closed captions are available on most newly published CG Cookie courses and lessons. Typically, content created for Blender 2.8+ and beyond includes English closed captions for all members.

Captions make learning more accessible and convenient, whether you’re watching without sound, clarifying technical terms, or following along in a noisy environment.

How to Enable Closed Captions

While logged into your CG Cookie account and viewing a course that offers captions:

  1. Hover over or click the video player to reveal the playback controls.
  2. Click the [CC] icon in the lower-right corner of the player.
  3. Select English (or another available language) from the subtitles menu.

This will display captions along the bottom of the video as it plays.

Note: If you don’t see the [CC] icon, the video may not have captions available yet. Most new content includes them automatically, while older lessons may still be in progress.

Pro Tip: Search Captions by Keyword

One of the most helpful features of captions on CG Cookie is the ability to search for specific words or topics within the captions. This lets you instantly find where a specific tool, concept, or technique is mentioned in a lesson.

  1. Make sure captions are enabled for the video.
  2. Use the Search Captions bar above the lesson video to enter a keyword (for example: “lighting” or “UV unwrap”).
  3. Results will highlight where that keyword appears in the video, allowing you to jump directly to that point.

Troubleshooting Tips

  • Captions not appearing? Refresh the page or toggle the [CC] icon off and on again.
  • Watching on mobile? Tap the video to reveal playback options, then look for the [CC] icon in the corner of the player.
  • Need different language support? Currently, CG Cookie provides English captions by default, but more language options may be added in future updates.

Closed captions make it easier to follow along with complex Blender workflows, especially when instructors use specific terminology or shortcuts. If you find a caption that needs correction, you can always contact our support team to let us know.
